Open Water Certification: Your First Breath Underwater
Our PADI Open Water Diver course is designed to build real confidence — not just hand you a card. Here's how it breaks down:
- Day 1–2: Confined Water (Pool) — We start in the pool for confined dives 1 through 4. This is where you learn the fundamentals: breathing underwater, clearing your mask, recovering your regulator, and mastering buoyancy in a safe, controlled setting.
- Day 3: Open Water Dives 1–3 at Tiger Tail Lake — This is where it gets real. You'll head to the lake and complete your first three open water dives on the training platforms and around the underwater attractions. Fair visibility and shallow depths (15–30 ft) make it the perfect transition from pool to open water.
- Day 4: Open Water Dive 4 on a Dive Boat — We take it offshore. Your fourth and final open water dive happens on a dive boat, giving you the full South Florida diving experience — reef, ocean, and that sweet certification card.

Advanced Open Water: Leveling Up at the Lake
Already certified and ready for more? The PADI Advanced Open Water course is where you start choosing your own adventure.
At Tiger Tail Lake, we typically focus on two key adventure dives: Underwater Navigation and Peak Performance Buoyancy. The lake's layout — with platforms, lines, and features to navigate around — makes it ideal for these skills. You'll learn to use a compass, navigate a pattern, and fine-tune your buoyancy so you're not bouncing off the bottom or floating to the surface.
From there, we move to shore dives and a dive boat for the remaining adventure dives, which might include deep diving, wreck diving, underwater photography, or fish ID — depending on what you're into. You pick the dives, we make it happen.
Rescue Diver: Serious Training, Serious Fun
The PADI Rescue Diver course is where you go from being a good diver to being the diver everyone wants as a buddy. And we run the entire Rescue course at Tiger Tail Lake.
Why the lake? Because it's a controlled environment where we can set up realistic scenarios — tired diver tows, panicked diver responses, search and recovery patterns, and unresponsive diver management — without the variables of current, boats, and marine life complicating things. You'll practice these skills over and over until they're muscle memory, so if the real thing ever happens, you don't have to think. You just act.

What is PADI certification?

What is the difference between PADI and SDI?
PADI and SDI (Scuba Diving International) are both globally recognized certification agencies. PADI is the largest and most widely recognized worldwide. SDI is part of TDI (Technical Diving International) and is known for its streamlined, modern approach to dive education. At Deep Current Systems, we offer both PADI and SDI certification tracks, so you can choose the path that fits your diving goals. Both certifications are widely accepted and interchangeable for most diving purposes.
How old do you need to be to get scuba certified?
You can start scuba diving at 10 years old with the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification. At Deep Current Systems, we train divers ages 10 and up across all our course offerings. Junior certifications come with depth restrictions until age 15, when the certification automatically upgrades to a full Open Water Diver certification.
How long does it take to get scuba certified?
Our Open Water Diver course typically runs over 4 days — 2 days of confined water (pool) training and 2 days of open water dives at Tiger Tail Lake and on a dive boat. We offer scheduled group classes and private classes on weekdays and weekends, so we can work with your schedule.
Do I need to know how to swim to scuba dive?
You don't need to be an Olympic swimmer, but you do need to be comfortable in the water. As part of the Open Water course, you'll complete a 200-yard swim (no time limit, any stroke) and a 10-minute float or tread water test. If you can do that, you're good to go.
Do I need to buy scuba gear before my class?
Nope! Deep Current Systems provides professional-grade equipment for all our training courses — the same quality gear our instructors dive with personally. You'll just need your own basic personal items (swimsuit, towel, etc.). If you'd like to purchase your own gear, our shop is just 5 minutes from Tiger Tail Lake and we'll help you find the right kit.
Is scuba diving safe?
Yes — when you're properly trained and certified. That's exactly why we don't rush our students. Scuba diving is very safe when you follow your training, dive within your limits, and respect the procedures you'll learn in your PADI or SDI course. At Deep Current Systems, safety isn't a checkbox — it's the foundation of everything we teach.
How deep do you go in Open Water training?
At Tiger Tail Lake, most of our training dives are between 15 and 30 feet. The PADI Open Water Diver certification qualifies you to dive to 60 feet (40 feet for Junior Open Water divers ages 10–14). Advanced Open Water certification extends that to 100 feet.
What is the visibility like at Tiger Tail Lake?
Tiger Tail Lake has fair visibility — not crystal clear like a tropical reef, but more than enough for training. After that, the Rescue Diver course takes your skills to the next level — teaching you to handle emergencies and become the diver everyone wants as a buddy.

Can I take scuba classes if I have a medical condition?
